JOHN JACK FLAHERTY
John Jack Flaherty entered the Navy at the age of 17 and served on the ship LCI 626 during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. His 3 late brothers, Tom, Bill Huck, and Rege also respectively served in the Marines, Army and Air Force.
Jack, a lifelong Pittsburgher, grew up in Garfield. He was married to the late Lucille Rodan for 59 years. They were devout Catholics and raised 5 children, Judge Tom Flaherty, Dan, Greg, Mary and Virginia, and grandson, Andrew.
He was a draftsman for 40 years at Mesta Machine and 20 years at Alcosan, retiring at the age of 79. He also designed beautiful homes in Shadyside in his spare time and is still doing so at the age of 91. He has resided in his Shadyside home for 63 years.
His favorite line while raising children was "When you make it in life, never pull up that ladder behind you, continue to help others up that ladder to succeed as well", which he truly exemplifies!
