EARL BIRDY
Earl Birdy joined the Marine Corps when he was just a senior at Peabody High School in the City of Pittsburgh. He served with the 3rd Amphibious Corps on Guam Island during World War II. Once the war was over, he was stationed in Tientsin, China with the 1st Division, 6th Marines. Because of the G.I. Bill, he attended Slippery Rock State Teachers College where he excelled in sports and met his bride, Shirley Dean. He graduated in 1951 and later that year, joined the staff at Carnegie-Mellon University where he spent his career in the Athletics Department. For Earl, Veterans Day is more than just a day in November - it is an every day mission. He is on the Board of Trustees of the West Mifflin V.F.W. Post 914, and served as Chairman of the Youth Activities Committee for 9 years. The main purpose of the VFW is to help the Veterans who are here and honor the Veterans who we have lost.
