CELEBRATING PETER SCHEPIS Peter Robert Schepis, born on February 4th one hundred years ago in NuMine, PA, the youngest of six siblings to Italian immigrants Nick and Angeline Schepis. He began life in their small grocery in Kittanning before moving on to work in their market in Clairton. Drafted at the age of 18, just after high school graduation in 1943, he put his driving experience to use in the medical corp as an ambulance driver throughout Europe, saving lives in Germany and Belgium as part of a small fleet of ambulances. He remembers teaching his partner to drive the ambulance, and also occasionally helping the company cook, a skill he continued at home creating Sunday dinners. After two years, he returned home on a ship along with 6,000 soldiers. A soft-spoken gentleman dedicated to serving others, Pete began by serving as a war-time ambulance driver, then working in the Clairton Fire Department, retiring as Captain. His strong work ethic continued by working as a rural delivery postman for years and finally at age 85 retiring from Jefferson Hospital Lab. A life-long Clairton resident, he is a member of St. Clare of Assisi church and the Clairton Lions Club. As a former president of the Wilson Civic Association, he was known for his humor and wit, often entertaining members during weekly Bingo games. Peter also loved supporting the Clairton Bears football and sometimes helped announce Clairton High School games alongside his brother Frank. On Saturdays, he and his brother could be found making sausage in the family store on Miller Avenue, across from the football stadium. Pete always found time to support his family, friends, and community. He and his late wife Rose of 55 years raised three children in Clairton: Peter, Bernadette and Denise. On February 1st he will celebrate his 100th birthday with friends and family, including six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
