EARL BIRDY
MARINE CORPS
Earl Birdy joined the Marine Corps when he was just a
senior at Peabody High School in the City of Pittsburgh.
He served with the 3rd Amphibious Corps on Guam
Island during World War II. Once the war was over, he
was stationed in Tientsin, China with the 1st Division,
6th Marines. Because of the G.I. Bill, he attended
Slippery Rock State Teachers College where he excelled
in sports and met his bride, Shirley Dean. He graduated
in 1951 and later that year, joined the staff at CarnegieMellon
University where he spent his career in the
Athletics Department. For Earl, Veterans Day is more
than just a day in November - it is an every day mission.
He is on the Board of Trustees of the West Mifflin V.F.W.
Post 914, and served as Chairman of the Youth Activities
Committee for 9 years. "The main purpose of the VFW is
to help the Veterans who are here and honor the
Veterans who we have lost."
Thank you for your service, Love, Your Family

WAYNE F. WILLIAMS WHILE ON TOU...
WAYNE F. WILLIAMS
While on tour of duty in Vietnam, I won the prestigious
award of "Soldier of the Month". To say the least, it was
one of the toughest places in the world to be recognized
for military contributions. This accomplishment
happened simultaneously in the midst of being
preoccupied with helping resolve a military conflict.
However, selection for participating in the running for
this award may have come by way of name recognition
and credibility towards becoming a future leader. As a
matter of fact, I won numerous stateside local
competition awards before my deployment overseas
along with those officers and local competitive
evaluation judges. Therefore, I felt comfortable putting
my name in to go before the review board despite the
hostile environment. Qualifications of the review board
include, but are not limited to: exceptional job
performance, understanding of their section, team,
company's mission (and higher: battalion, brigade, Army
if necessary), impeccable uniform and presence,
attitude, technical and tactical competency leadership
qualities, and knowledge of current events and how
those events impacted our unit or Nation. In the end,
this experience can never be duplicated nor taken for
granted. We all owe our gratitude to those brave men
and women who set the bar for excellence, regardless
of the obstacles in front of them.

birthday with many friends
at Rico's Restaurant. Blase
retired after 45 years as a
master bricklayer from BAC
Local #9. From a little town
with majestic mountains
where Primo Carnera
came... a "war" boy.
Traveled to the USA to make
a future for yourself.
Although you left your native
land, you never forgot where
you came from. We are
proud of your
accomplishments and
achievements. Like many
before and after your
arrival... you were taught
through the school of hard
knocks. Work. Save. Be
honest. Tell the truth.
Quitting is NOT an option.
You taught us to do good
and stay out of trouble.
Through the good times and
bad, you were a provider to
the family and always kept
your Catholic faith. Family,
tradition, and self-reliance
are your values.
